Cupe 4400 Collective Agreement 2019


All CUPE members work under the protection of a collective agreement called a collective agreement. Your local union negotiates the terms of the agreement. Elected local union leaders also work with the employer to resolve workplace issues. If this action begins as planned, the Board of Directors will close all schools for all students on Monday, October 7, 2019 and for the duration of the employment action. While we understand that this is a difficult time, parents will be forced to make alternative arrangements for their children. This is not a decision we have taken lightly and we have explored all possible contingency plans to keep schools open. The supervision and safety of our students is a top priority for us and without the important services of these school staff, we cannot guarantee that our learning environments remain safe and unique to all students. Members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents education workers on Ontario school boards (including CUPE 4400 at the TDSB), voted in favour of action on employment that could take place as early as September 30. CUPE announced that its members will take further work action on Monday, October 7, 2019, unless a new collective agreement is reached through negotiations with the province and the board of directors.

The new work action will be a total abolition of services, otherwise known as strikes or exits. More than 18,000 employees will not be on the job for the duration of the strike, or nearly half of the Toronto District School Board employees. Most of these employees work in schools.
